The Happy Cat Sanctuary fire that devastated a beloved Long Island safe haven for cats has left the animal-loving community in shock. The tragic blaze broke out just after 7 a.m. on March 31 in Medford, New York, claiming the lives of more than 160 cats and the sanctuary’s devoted founder, Chris Arsenault.
Since 2006, Arsenault, 65, had poured his heart into creating a refuge for abandoned and stray cats. Witnesses say he heroically ran back into the flames in an attempt to save more animals. Sadly, he and several of his personal cats perished in the fire, which officials have determined to be of “undetermined” origin, with no signs of foul play.

Happy Cat Sanctuary fire rescue mission continues
In the days following the Happy Cat Sanctuary fire, rescue teams including Strong Island Animal Rescue League and Paws of War have been tirelessly searching through the ruins. On April 7, they shared an emotional update: 54 more deceased cats were discovered, raising the death toll to over 160.
“Today was incredibly tough,” said Frankie Floridia of Strong Island. “We hoped to find survivors—but instead, we recovered dozens more lost lives.”
Despite the devastation, glimmers of hope remain. Injured cats are still being found, including a survivor now named Mittens, adopted immediately by Arsenault’s daughter. The team remains committed to honoring Chris’s memory by saving every possible life left in the rubble.

Happy Cat Sanctuary fire sparks massive adoption efforts
Thanks to swift collaboration between local shelters and rescue groups, over 180 cats that made it out alive are now receiving medical care and preparing for adoption. North Shore Animal League America mobilized more than 50 veterinary professionals to provide treatment including exams, vaccinations, and more.
A temporary shelter has been set up to house the survivors, and partner organizations are continuing with decompression, socialization, and rehoming procedures. If you’re interested in adopting or helping a specific feline, Happy Cat Sanctuary will guide you to the right rescue partner.
A GoFundMe for the sanctuary has already raised over $800,000, demonstrating overwhelming community support.
In a statement, the Happy Cat Sanctuary team said:
“This has been the most difficult experience we’ve ever faced. Every effort is being made to give these cats the compassion and care they so deserve. We thank everyone who has stood with us during this tragedy.”
