Wyoming Deputy Saves Toddler, Attends His Graduation

Wyoming Deputy Saves Toddler

Wyoming deputy saves toddler — and fifteen years later, that child, now a graduating senior, gave him a moment he’ll never forget.

One stormy July night in 2010, Detective Sgt. Jeff Sheaman, then new in his role, responded to a distress call near Flaming Gorge Reservoir on Wyoming’s Green River. A family had become stranded after their boat broke down, and among them was 3-year-old David Lew.

When Sheaman arrived with two other officers, he helped rescue the group. On the way back, a cold storm hit. Little David became unconscious from exposure. Acting quickly, Sheaman removed the boy’s life vest, held him close against his chest, and wrapped him in his own coat.

David was treated for hypothermia and made a full recovery — thanks to Sheaman’s fast response. Paramedics credited him with preventing a far worse outcome.

Now 17, David works part-time at his family’s restaurant and is preparing to attend Western Wyoming Community College. Recently, he wrote a thank-you letter to Sheaman, asking him to attend his graduation and hand him his diploma.

“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for him,” David wrote.

For Sheaman, who retires this May, the same month as David’s graduation, the letter came at a meaningful time.

“In this job, you see a lot — some good, some heartbreaking,” Sheaman shared. “David reminds me why we do this.”

He added with a smile, “I just hope I don’t trip on stage.”
