E.T. Movie Behind The Scenes

E.T. Movie Behind The Scenes: When we think of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, we picture the heartwarming bond between a boy and an alien, a tale of friendship and adventure. But there’s much more to this iconic 1982 film than meets the eye. In a recent appearance on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, actress Dee Wallace, who portrayed Elliott’s mom Mary, shared some surprising behind-the-scenes details that could have taken the movie in a very different direction.

The Hidden Story in E.T. Movie Behind the Scenes

Wallace revealed that E.T. almost had a more adult and unexpected subplot—an affair between her character, Mary, and the alien himself. Yes, you read that right. According to Wallace, there was an entire storyline where E.T. developed a “love crush” on her character. In one particular scene, E.T. was supposed to place Reese’s Pieces by her bedside while she was asleep, but director Steven Spielberg envisioned the scene with the sheet lower than Wallace felt comfortable with.

“We ended up having a discussion, and I made it clear that this was supposed to be a family film,” she explained. “It was pure to me, and I didn’t think that was the right direction.” After a few consultations with the movie’s writer, Melissa Mathison, and producer Kathleen Kennedy, the team reached a compromise, raising the sheet to a more comfortable level for Wallace, but the idea of the “E.T. movie behind the scenes” subplot remained part of the conversation.

Wallace also shared her thoughts on her young co-star, Drew Barrymore, who was only seven years old at the time. Even then, Wallace knew Barrymore was destined for greatness. “From day one, we could tell she had an incredible future ahead of her, not just as an actress but as a producer and director,” Wallace remarked. “On set, she was so confident—she came up to me, sat in my lap, and said, ‘I’m going to sit here now,’ and I just knew she was special.”

E.T. Movie Behind the Scenes: A Film That Lives in Our Hearts

Despite the quirky behind-the-scenes moments, Wallace had a strong sense that E.T. would become the cultural phenomenon that it did. She recalled her first time watching the film with an audience, saying, “You could feel it in the air—the way the audience responded. That film touches something deep in your soul, making you feel something profound.”

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial remains a beloved classic, not just for its heartwarming story, but also for the untold stories that shaped it. The E.T. movie behind the scenes is full of surprising moments that prove the magic of filmmaking lies in both the seen and unseen.
