Parenting influencer Lindsay Dewey recently shared the heartbreaking news that her 22-month-old son, Reed, passed away in February following a tragic household accident involving an unanchored mirror.
According to Dewey’s Instagram Stories, the toddler had been playing with a suction cup bowl, repeatedly attaching and detaching it from a mirror. The continuous motion eventually caused the glass to collapse, tragically crushing Reed in their Idaho home.
Dewey, a mother of three, had last seen him engaged with magnetic tiles and was unaware of his new activity. She was just 10 feet away, preparing dinner in another room, when she heard the mirror crash to the ground. Despite the mirror’s significant weight, Dewey managed to lift it off Reed within seconds.
“At first, I couldn’t comprehend how it happened,” she wrote. “It seemed impossible that our kids could move such a heavy object. We never felt the urgency to secure it because of its placement and stability.”
However, as she repositioned the mirror against the wall, she noticed Reed’s bowl still attached to it. That’s when she realized exactly what had led to the accident.

Tragic Child Safety Accidents: Dewey, known for being a cautious parent, had secured dressers, chests, windows, doors, and outlets with childproof locks. The mirror, although usually stabilized by a chair, had been left unsecured after a recent room rearrangement due to a pet-related mess.
“So many small decisions led to this terrible event,” Dewey reflected. “It was an unpredictable, devastating accident—one we can never undo.”
After the incident, Reed was rushed to the hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered severe brain swelling. His condition led to a coma, and despite medical efforts, he was declared brain dead days later.
In a moment of immense grief, Dewey and her husband, Eric, chose to donate Reed’s organs, helping save the lives of five children.
“I kept telling myself, ‘If he doesn’t receive his miracle, he will become one,’” she wrote in an emotional update. “Our worst day became someone else’s best, and I will always be proud of our little hero.”
Tragic Child Safety Accidents: A local clothing company, Little Hunters Wife, has since launched a “Remembering Reed” collection, with all proceeds going directly to the Dewey family.
