But he worries, “What if something happens to us both? Then James would be left to the state with no say from us.”
The couple wants to find a place where James can live a fulfilling life and feel part of a community, rather than being isolated or forgotten.

When James was a baby, Colin noticed he wasn’t meeting milestones like sitting or crawling, which led to his initial cerebral palsy diagnosis. It wasn’t until James was about two and a half that a pediatrician suggested testing for Angelman syndrome, especially after noticing James’s frequent laughter and characteristic hand movements.
Colin shared with People magazine how he immediately asked about James’s life expectancy and pain levels. He was relieved to hear the life expectancy was normal and pain wasn’t a major issue.
Seizures have been a major challenge over the years, with Colin recounting hospital visits and administering medication during emergencies. Despite these hardships, James has made incredible progress, like learning to feed himself and taking his first steps before turning four—moments Colin describes as “magic.”
