When Tara Borelli saw a Facebook post about an abandoned dog in Atlanta, she couldn’t ignore it. The post detailed the story of Andre, a boxer-pit bull mix, who had been tied up in a yard near Piedmont Park, with a note attached to his collar. It was clear the dog had been left behind with the hope that someone would come to his rescue.
The note read, “My dad is facing homelessness and has no one to take me. I am a really good dog. My dad’s heart is broken, and no shelter will take me. Please treat Andre with love and kindness.” For Borelli, this was the plea she couldn’t turn away from, so she set out in the midst of a snowstorm to rescue him.

Abandoned Dog Atlanta: A Long and Dangerous Journey
Borelli, a nonprofit attorney, knew she had to do something, despite the storm that was getting worse. As she drove the ten miles to reach Andre, the roads were becoming dangerous, and she struggled with traction. She even found herself in a minor car accident along the way. But with determination and a bit of luck, she reached the dog and managed to get back home.
While Borelli cared for Andre over the next few months, she knew she couldn’t keep him forever due to her own dog’s health issues. In April, Borelli made the painful decision to bring Andre to a local shelter so that he could find his forever home. It was the hardest choice she had to make, but she hoped someone else would offer him the love he deserved.

Abandoned Dog Atlanta: A New Beginning
At the Fulton County Animal Services shelter, where Andre was taken, he was met by volunteer Laura Hsiao. Hsiao had followed Andre’s story from the very beginning and was committed to ensuring the dog settled in well. Andre’s story had touched the hearts of many, and thanks to the support of the community, Andre was eventually adopted by a loving family in early May.
His new family will foster Andre for a month to make sure everything is the right fit. If it works out, they plan to officially adopt him, giving this abandoned dog in Atlanta the chance at a fresh start.
