Authorities in Alaska successfully saved a man who tumbled off a steep cliff while trying to locate his lost dog.
The dramatic incident took place on Sunday, March 30, when firefighters were alerted to an emergency near Point Woronzof along the coastal trail, the Anchorage Fire Department shared in a Facebook update.
“A man realized his dog, Xena, was missing and leaned over the edge of the cliff in hopes of spotting her,” officials reported. “The branch he held onto suddenly snapped, causing him to plummet down the cliff alongside his dog.”
Emergency responders quickly arrived, securing the injured individual before turning their attention to rescuing Xena.

Alaska Cliff Rescue: Firefighters Save Man and Dog
Once the man was safely assisted, first responders focused on getting his frightened dog to safety.
“Fortunately, an officer from Anchorage Animal Care and Control had some treats on hand, which helped persuade Xena to cooperate,” the fire department shared. Megan Peters, a spokesperson for the department, told KTUU that officials worked carefully to lower the dog down to the shoreline.
“Xena was then entrusted to a family friend who was present at the scene, and emergency crews wrapped up their mission just before 5:00 p.m.,” authorities confirmed.
Meanwhile, the dog’s owner was transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Officials later emphasized the importance of keeping pets leashed and staying on designated paths along the Coastal Trail.

Safety Warnings Following Alaska Cliff Rescue
After the incident, officials urged visitors to prioritize their safety by avoiding unstable ground along the trail.
“In many areas, it’s difficult to determine how secure the ground is beneath you, so staying on the paved path is the safest option,” Peters explained to KTUU. “If an emergency arises off the trail, it’s best to call for assistance rather than putting yourself in danger.”
The Anchorage Fire Department reiterated that in such situations, people should contact emergency services rather than risking their own well-being by attempting a rescue themselves.
