In a recent conversation with The Morning Hustle on April 30, Tameka “Tiny” Harris and Kandi Burruss — members of the R&B group Xscape — shared a moment they’ve never forgotten: the Biggie Smalls Xscape apology that came just before the rapper’s untimely death.
Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls, had previously mocked the group in his controversial 1994 track “Just Playing (Dreams).” In the song, Biggie name-dropped numerous celebrities and made explicit remarks, including a jab at Xscape, saying, “I’ll f— RuPaul before I f— them ugly-a– Xscape bitches.”

Biggie Smalls Xscape apology happened after the Soul Train Awards
According to Harris, now 49, and Burruss, 48, the apology came at an afterparty following the 1997 Soul Train Awards. Harris recalled someone — possibly Sean “Diddy” Combs — approaching them to say that Biggie wanted a word. She decided to hear him out.
“He was surprisingly kind and very apologetic,” said Harris. “He told us, ‘I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m ugly as hell, y’all are beautiful, and I just want to say sorry.’”

Biggie Smalls Xscape apology came moments before his death
What shocked them most was the timing. According to Harris, the Biggie Smalls Xscape apology came just 20 to 30 minutes before Biggie was gunned down.
The Brooklyn native, just 24 years old at the time, had already made a massive mark on hip-hop. His debut album Ready to Die (1994) and the posthumous Life After Death (1997) solidified his status as a rap legend. The latter went on to sell over 10 million copies, achieving diamond certification.
Biggie was killed on March 9, 1997, in a drive-by shooting while leaving the very afterparty where he offered his sincere words to Xscape. His murder remains one of the most significant and tragic moments in hip-hop history.
