Bohemia Cat Hoarding has taken a tragic turn after local firefighters responded to a distress call about a strong, unpleasant odor coming from a residence in Bohemia, New York. What they uncovered was deeply unsettling.
Firefighters from the Bohemia Fire Department arrived at the two-story property on Saturday, May 3, following reports of a pungent ammonia-like smell. Once inside, they were met with a heartbreaking scene: dozens of cats — both living and deceased — scattered throughout the home.
Bohemia Cat Hoarding Sparks Emergency Response
Authorities immediately contacted the Suffolk County SPCA and the Town of Islip HazMat team to assist with the dire situation. Due to the lack of electricity, SPCA investigators had to search the property using flashlights. Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, reported that they discovered 28 deceased cats and more than 50 still alive.
The house was officially condemned due to its hazardous conditions. According to fire officials, some of the dead cats were found in a freezer, while others were located in various parts of the house.
Bohemia Cat Hoarding Leaves Cats in Critical Condition
Neighbors revealed that the elderly couple who lived in the house had been feeding stray cats for years. After the wife passed away a few weeks prior, her 75-year-old husband struggled to manage the overwhelming number of animals alone, causing the situation to deteriorate further.
A total of 61 surviving cats were rescued from the scene. Many of them are in poor health, requiring immediate veterinary care. Three had to be euthanized due to severe medical issues. The cats are now being treated in a mobile veterinary clinic, with help from the Town of Islip Animal Shelter.
The SPCA is currently seeking $10,000 in donations to cover the growing medical expenses. So far, the homeowner has not been charged.
