In a major escalation of the China US trade war 2025, Beijing has retaliated against President Donald Trump’s latest trade measures. On Friday, China’s Ministry of Finance announced a 34% import duty on all American goods, mirroring the 34% tariffs the U.S. plans to enforce on Chinese products by April 9.
This move builds on an earlier 20% levy imposed by the U.S. aimed at curbing fentanyl trafficking. Combined, these actions bring total U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods to 54%, significantly ramping up trade pressures.
Beijing denounced the U.S. tariffs, labeling them as a breach of global trade norms and describing them as a “unilateral bullying tactic” that harms China’s lawful interests.
China US Trade War 2025: More Than Just Tariffs
To lessen the blow for some U.S. businesses, China’s Ministry of Finance clarified that goods shipped before 12:01 a.m. on April 10 and arriving before midnight on May 13, 2025, will not face the new tariff hike.
In addition to the tariffs, China is tightening restrictions in other areas. State-run Xinhua News Agency reported that Beijing has expanded its export ban to include seven new categories of rare earth materials, further limiting crucial resources flowing to the U.S.
Moreover, China broadened its “unreliable entity list” by adding 11 more American companies and has kicked off an anti-dumping probe targeting medical CT tubes imported from both the U.S. and India.
These escalating actions underline the ongoing complexity and seriousness of the China US trade war 2025, as both global superpowers continue to trade economic blows.
