A Coastal Carpet Python was discovered just inches away from a pet bird, creating a nerve-wracking moment for the bird’s owner. Professional snake catcher Stuart McKenzie from Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers in Australia quickly stepped in to handle the situation at a home in Buderim.
McKenzie shared a gripping video on Facebook, revealing how the enormous snake was draped over a birdcage. Its head hung down the side of the enclosure, nearly touching the small grey bird inside. The frightened bird flapped around, retreating to the farthest corner of its cage.
“The snake definitely could have entered the cage—thankfully, we arrived in time,” McKenzie said in the footage. He emphasized how close the snake and the bird were, practically “touching noses” when he arrived.
Coastal Carpet Python Encounter: A Close Call
The video continues as McKenzie skillfully lifts the back half of the python with a hook. He gently supports its midsection and removes it from the enclosure. As he releases the hook, the snake’s head smoothly glides to the floor. Maintaining a calm demeanor, McKenzie places the reptile into a secure cloth bag designed for safe relocation.
The snake catcher assured viewers that both the snake and the bird were unharmed. “We’re able to catch this Coastal Carpet Python, and the bird is completely fine,” he stated during the rescue operation.

Coastal Carpet Python and Bird Safety Measures
On social media, McKenzie urged people not to blame the snake for following its natural instincts. He explained that the python simply mistook the pet bird for a potential meal, as it does not distinguish between wild and domestic animals.
He also advised bird owners living in reptile-prone areas to invest in snake-proof enclosures. “Unfortunately, many cages sold today are not designed to keep out snakes. This leads to heartache for many families who lose their beloved pets,” McKenzie wrote in his post.
By taking preventive measures, pet owners can ensure their animals remain safe while respecting the role of these incredible reptiles in the ecosystem.
