Emilio Estevez Mighty Ducks 4 script rejected by Disney

Emilio Estevez Mighty Ducks 4 script

The Emilio Estevez Mighty Ducks 4 script was penned by the actor himself during the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Estevez, now 62, is best remembered for his role as Gordon Bombay—an attorney-turned-peewee hockey coach—in the original 1992 Mighty Ducks film and its sequels (D2 in 1994 and D3 in 1996).

In 2021, he briefly returned as Bombay in Disney’s reboot series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, but exited after the first season due to what he described as a “classic contract dispute.” Hoping to redeem what he called the “mess” of Game Changers, he took matters into his own hands with a brand-new movie idea.

Emilio Estevez Mighty Ducks 4 script features bold concept

Estevez envisioned a feature-length continuation centered around Coach Bombay being lured back into the game—this time by former players played by Josh Jackson and Kenan Thompson. The twist? Bombay is now coaching roller derby, and when approached to lead a new team in the pro women’s hockey league, he insists his girls come with him.

“It was heartfelt, fresh, and right on time with today’s themes,” Estevez said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “It had charm, a modern edge, and a sincere message.” Despite the passion behind the idea, Disney decided not to pursue the film, reminding Estevez that he doesn’t hold the rights to the franchise.

Side project: Maximum Overdrive 2

While crafting the Emilio Estevez Mighty Ducks 4 script, Estevez also developed a wild sequel to Maximum Overdrive, the 1986 cult horror film where machines turn on humans. He called the original “awful,” but let his imagination run free for the sequel.

In this version, his character Bill Robinson is now running his own diner and raising a daughter. Just as Guy Fieri arrives to film an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, all hell breaks loose again when machines gain consciousness. Unfortunately, the rights holders declined that pitch, too.

Writing as therapy

“These weren’t commissions,” Estevez explained. “I just kept writing because the ideas were too fun to drop.” From the Emilio Estevez Mighty Ducks 4 script to his apocalyptic diner vision, he’s clearly still driven by creativity—even when the studios aren’t biting.
