Jeff Bridges The Dude Reflects on His Iconic Role

Jeff Bridges The Dude

Jeff Bridges The Dude has never grown tired of the nickname that’s followed him for decades—and he’s just fine with that.

In a recent exclusive conversation, the legendary actor and musician opened up about how he feels being forever linked to his beloved character “The Dude” from The Big Lebowski.

“Not really,” he shares. “I have such a deep love for that film and feel lucky to have been part of it.”

Bridges calls it “a brilliant film” and says it still resonates with people today. Surprisingly, he noted that the line most quoted to him by fans actually comes from a different film—Starman.

“It’s a story about an alien learning how to be human,” Bridges explains.

He recalls a scene where his character runs a yellow light and Karen Allen’s character questions it. “She says, ‘Did you see that light?’ And I respond, ‘I watched you very carefully. Red light stop, green light go, yellow light go very fast.’”

Even after all these years, Bridges finds himself still closely connected to The Big Lebowski. He’s currently taking part in Q&A sessions across Los Angeles at special screenings of the movie.

“I’ll be doing talks centered around photos I took on set,” he explains. “I used a Widelux panoramic camera that’s not made anymore.”

Bridges and his wife Susan are even in the process of recreating that very camera—a project that ties perfectly into the nostalgia and legacy of the film.

“I might be biased, but The Big Lebowski remains one of my top films,” he admits.

In addition to film, Bridges is diving back into his music. On April 12, he dropped Slow Magic 1977-1978, a collection of previously unreleased tracks recorded decades ago.

The project, created in collaboration with Keefus Ciancia, Jean Sievers, and Matt Sullivan, features West LA musicians from the era—including members of Oingo Boingo and actor Burgess Meredith.

It’s a laid-back blend of experimental sessions and raw creativity, capturing the spirit of a time when it was all about jamming with friends and letting the magic happen.
