As reported by Telegraph India, the fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. local time and raged for approximately eight hours before firefighters managed to bring it under control. Rescue efforts are still ongoing, according to the BBC.

The exact cause of the Kolkata hotel fire 2025 remains unknown. However, six fire engines were deployed to douse the flames. Among the deceased are 10 men, one woman, a 10-year-old girl, and a 3-year-old girl. One individual died after falling from the building while attempting to escape.

At the time of the incident, the hotel reportedly had 88 guests across 42 rooms. So far, police have confirmed the identities of eight victims, including three members of a Chennai-based family. Another 13 people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation or injuries, but as of the latest update, only one remains admitted.

Among the survivors was a guest named Shyam from Mumbai, who had fallen asleep in his room. Firefighters discovered him alive nearly four hours into their operation.

Kolkata Police has announced the formation of a special investigation team to determine the cause and identify any lapses. Mayor Firhad Hakim assured the public that legal action would be taken against anyone found guilty of negligence.

Sujit Bose, the state fire services minister, criticized the hotel for not complying with fire safety standards. “The entire structure was covered in glass, leaving no exit for smoke and heat. Firefighters had to break the glass to get inside,” he stated.
