Mamma Mia 3 buzz is back, and with it, fun behind-the-scenes stories from the original films are resurfacing. Christine Baranski recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote the latest season of Nine Perfect Strangers — but the conversation quickly turned to the unforgettable musical moments from Mamma Mia! (2008).
Baranski, who portrayed Tanya — one of Donna’s (Meryl Streep) best friends — fondly reflected on the musical numbers and how her co-stars handled them. She recalled that Pierce Brosnan enthusiastically danced down the hill during “Dancing Queen,” while Colin Firth approached the moves with a sense of irony.

But it was Stellan Skarsgård who had the most memorable reaction — and not exactly in a good way. According to Baranski, he wasn’t thrilled about joining in on the choreography. “Stellan hated it,” she shared, describing how he resisted dancing during filming. When the director Ol Parker finally asked Skarsgård to do a close-up for the dance number, he allegedly responded with a string of humorous expletives, comparing it to being asked to perform “Arabic poetry while jumping rope.” Despite the struggle, Baranski confirmed, “He did it. And it was hilarious.”
Mamma Mia 3: What We Know About the Next Chapter
The beloved musical franchise is far from over. Baranski revealed that Mamma Mia 3 is already in the early planning stages. In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she confirmed that she recently met with producer Judy Craymer, who’s actively working on the third film.
“She shared the plot outline with me. That’s all I can reveal!” Baranski said, clearly excited about the potential for another sunny, music-filled reunion.

She praised Craymer’s ability to bring things together, noting that the producer previously made Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) a massive success. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she pulls everyone back together,” Baranski added.
With the possibility of the original cast — including Amanda Seyfried, Cher, Andy Garcia, and more — returning, fans have plenty to look forward to as Mamma Mia 3 becomes more than just a rumor.
