Retired Military Dogs hold a special place in the hearts of those who served alongside them. For many handlers, the bond they share with their canine partners is deep and irreplaceable. Such is the case with Frenky, a 10-year-old German Shepherd, who served with Army Ssg. Kristin Vanderzanden for nearly four and a half years. They worked together on high-stakes missions, including tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, where they completed around 20 Secret Service assignments, protecting some of the most important figures in the world.

The Emotional Journey of Reuniting with Retired Military Dogs
Though Frenky was known for his calm and collected demeanor in high-pressure situations, off-duty, he was a playful and affectionate companion. His presence brought joy and comfort to the soldiers around him, making him a beloved mascot at their base. As a working dog, Frenky had a remarkable impact on the morale of his team, something that stayed with Vanderzanden even after their separation.
In 2021, the pair was sadly separated when Vanderzanden was reassigned to Fort Drum in New York. Although she visited Frenky occasionally, the thought of saying goodbye again was too painful. Despite holding out hope for a reunion, Vanderzanden had nearly given up on the idea of adopting Frenky once his service ended.

How the American Humane Society Supports Retired Military Dogs
But then came a glimmer of hope. In 2024, Vanderzanden was informed that Frenky would soon be retiring, and she immediately reached out to the American Humane Society (AHS) to explore the possibility of bringing him home. The AHS runs a Retired Military Dogs reunification program that helps handlers reconnect with their loyal partners after their service ends.
With the help of the AHS, Frenky was transferred from his base in Louisiana to his new home with Vanderzanden in San Antonio. The organization covered all transportation costs and offered lifelong veterinary care for Frenky, ensuring that his post-service life would be comfortable and full of love. Vanderzanden now looks forward to giving him a life of relaxation, where he can enjoy leisurely days at parks and dog-friendly restaurants in San Antonio—experiences she had always hoped to share with him.
