Selena Gomez mental health journey has been anything but easy, yet the singer and actress has continued to share her experiences for the greater good. In a recent interview with Billboard Español on April 24, 2025, Gomez opened up about why it’s important for her to speak out about mental health, something close to her heart.
Gomez, who will be honored as Woman of the Year at the 2025 Billboard Latin Women in Music event on May 1, shared that, regardless of fame, it’s vital to be vocal about issues that matter. “At the end of the day, I believe it’s important to speak out about what matters to you, whether you’re famous or not,” she said.
However, she added that it’s not always easy. “It’s not for the faint of heart because when you put yourself out there, trust me, there will be a lot of opinions thrown your way,” she explained. Despite these challenges, Gomez emphasized that she was determined to take the risk in the hope of helping others.

Selena Gomez Mental Health Journey: Overcoming Fear and Finding Strength
Gomez recalled the first time she decided to be open about her mental health journey, admitting that it was frightening to be so vulnerable. “I was scared. I didn’t want anyone to think I was playing the victim,” she said. However, through her courage in sharing her story, she hoped to make a positive impact. “By speaking up, I hoped to help others, and I’m willing to face any backlash that may come with it because I see the bigger picture,” Gomez shared.
Her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. In the past, she has hosted the third annual Rare Beauty Mental Health Summit in May and, just last year, organized the first Rare Impact Fund Benefit. Both events focused on raising funds for youth mental health initiatives, an area of great importance to her.

In October 2023, at the Rare Impact Fund Benefit, Gomez reflected on her own mental health struggles. “My involvement in mental health advocacy came from some of the darkest moments in my life,” she revealed.
Having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020, Gomez shared how the diagnosis brought clarity. “I had been searching for answers for so long, and receiving a diagnosis made everything change,” she confessed. The knowledge helped her better understand herself, and today she feels less afraid of her struggles.
In her 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, the singer provided an intimate look into her mental health setbacks and victories, giving her fans a glimpse into her journey of healing.
