The reindeer, known for being adored by the local community, faced a heartbreaking end after surveillance footage captured a mysterious individual dousing his quarters with an unknown substance.
Reindeer had been in poor health for a while, with various issues that worsened following these incidents. “His health was deteriorating, and he was in a lot of pain,” explained Albert Whitehead, Reindeer’s owner. The individual used heavy-duty bolt cutters to break into the pen. Afterward, Reindeer was found wandering the streets of downtown Anchorage. When Whitehead reviewed the security footage, he was shocked to see the same person hitting the animal in the face with an unknown substance.

The tragic passing of Star the Reindeer leaves a significant void in the Anchorage community. The tradition of having a reindeer in downtown Anchorage, which began in the 1960s, now hangs in the balance. Whitehead expressed doubt about continuing the tradition, saying, “Would you be willing to put another animal into that pen, knowing there’s someone out there doing this kind of thing to them?”
