The Breakfast Club 40th anniversary reunion brought together beloved stars Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, and Emilio Estevez at Chicago’s C2E2 pop culture convention on April 12. Fans were treated to heartfelt reflections and behind-the-scenes stories from the making of John Hughes’s 1985 teen classic.
During the panel—moderated by Josh Horowitz—a fan asked about a moment that’s stirred discussion for decades: the makeover scene involving Sheedy’s character, Allison. While some viewers felt the transformation undermined the character’s uniqueness, the cast had mixed reactions.
Ringwald was quick to distance herself from the decision.
“I just want to say, I wasn’t responsible for the makeover,” she clarified. “I honestly didn’t like it. I thought it would’ve been more powerful to just take off the makeup instead. She was already beautiful. And I didn’t like how they did her hair either.”
Nelson, however, had a different perspective. He defended the scene, pointing out that transformation moments were common in ‘80s and ‘90s teen films. He also referenced the characters’ dialogue as justification:
“People forget it’s explained right in the scene. Claire says, ‘Why are you doing this?’ and Allison responds, ‘Because you’re letting me.’ That gives it context.”
Sheedy herself didn’t weigh in on the specific scene during this event, but she did share her memories about the energy on set.

The Breakfast Club 40th anniversary reunion: Cast Reflections
“It felt a lot like doing live theater,” Sheedy remembered. “Every day, we were doing eight to ten pages of dialogue. It was intense, but incredibly rewarding with John’s direction guiding us.”
Hall added, “We were all still students, working six days a week. Emilio, Ally, Molly, and I had to juggle school and filming. It was a grind, but we were passionate.”
Nelson offered some lighthearted anecdotes too.
“We only had one night off—Saturday night. Emilio and I would head into Chicago for a few hours of freedom. Ally usually stayed in. No clue what went on in there!”
Hall joked, “And somehow, I barely walked away with a GED. Thanks, everyone.”

The Breakfast Club 40th anniversary reunion: A Nostalgic Milestone
The event highlighted how The Breakfast Club continues to resonate with audiences even 40 years later. The reunion wasn’t just a celebration of a classic film—it was a chance for fans and actors alike to reflect on how much the characters, themes, and even controversial scenes still matter today.
