What to Expect from Toy Story 5: Release Date & New Themes

While most of the storyline remains under wraps, Disney offered a few clues during its D23 Expo in August 2024. Director Andrew Stanton revealed that the film would explore modern challenges for toys, particularly how electronic devices have changed the way children play.

“In Toy Story 5, the toys’ mission becomes way tougher when they go up against kids’ growing obsession with screens,” Stanton shared. Concept art from the teaser trailer showed Woody, Buzz, and Jessie watching sadly as their young owner is completely absorbed in a tablet.

Stanton, the creative mind behind Finding Nemo and A Bug’s Life, is teaming up with McKenna Harris, who worked on Elemental, to co-direct the new film. Harris expressed her excitement on Instagram, saying, “YEEE-HAW! I’m co-directing Toy Story 5 with the best crew ever!”

Fans will also see a refreshing twist, with Jessie taking center stage this time. In a recent chat with WIVB, Tim Allen hinted that both Woody and Buzz would step back slightly to let Jessie, voiced once again by Joan Cusack, take the lead. “I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie,” Allen teased. “Woody and I do realign, and there’s an incredible opening scene with Buzz Lightyear.”
