Wet Hot American Summer has remained a beloved cult classic since its release in 2001. On the Tuesday, May 6, episode of Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd joined the host to reminisce about their unforgettable experiences on the set of the quirky comedy. In their conversation, the two actors dove into stories of their time playing camp counselors in this low-budget summer film, which would later become a pop culture touchstone.

Wet Hot American Summer: The Wild On-Set Experience
“We were all just a bunch of carefree people, eager to have fun,” Rudd, 56, recalled. Poehler, 53, quickly added a humorous correction, reminding Rudd that they weren’t “kids” at the time. Poehler was in her late 20s while Rudd was 30, yet they still acted as though they were on a carefree summer vacation.
The film, directed by David Wain, marked one of Rudd and Poehler’s early projects, alongside a cast that would go on to become stars, including Ken Marino, Elizabeth Banks, and Bradley Cooper. Despite its modest budget, the production was filled with unexpected moments that made it feel more like a summer getaway than a film set. Poehler shared that the days of filming felt incredibly relaxed, as they spent more time hanging out and playing music than actually working.

Wet Hot American Summer: Late-Night Chaos and Fun
The cast’s nightly routine often included loud music, drinks, and impromptu jam sessions. Rudd remembered driving 30 minutes to stock up on beer and saying, “Whoever wasn’t filming had to get the alcohol.” The fun didn’t stop there, as the group frequently found themselves in the “infirmary” where they stayed, partying late into the night.
A standout memory for Rudd involved actor David Hyde Pierce, who had just arrived on set. At 1 a.m., Pierce came out of his room to ask the group to quiet down. Rudd humorously recalled that when Pierce entered the room, the first thing Ken Marino said was, “Oh great, it’s Frasier,” a reference to Pierce’s iconic role on Frasier.
Despite the initial clash in noise levels, Rudd and Poehler fondly remembered Pierce as one of the nicest people on set. Poehler even mimicked his confused reaction when he first arrived, asking, “What’s going on here?”
